P2.3 billion worth of fake items confiscated in Valenzuela

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Friday reported the seizure of counterfeit luxury brand items and smuggled ukay-ukay (used clothing) worth P2.3 billion in Valenzuela City, according to a report by Philippine News Agency.

In a statement, Alvin Enciso, chief of Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS)-Manila International Container Port (MICP), said the inspection was conducted on July 2 after they received information about the presence of illegal goods in the warehouse in Barangay Maysan.

Upon inspection, the composite team discovered the different fake branded bags, luggage, bearing brands such as Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, and Nike and bales of used clothing, face masks, and other imported items.

MICP district collector Romeo Allan Rosales issued a warrant of seizure and detention for the violation of Section 224 in relation to Section 219 of Republic Act 10863 also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) after the inspection and upon finding proof of smuggled products.

The misdeclaration and misclassification of goods in a shipment resulting in deficiency between the duty and tax that should have been paid and the duty and tax actually paid is punishable under the CMTA.

The BOC added that country representatives from Louis Vuitton and Nike were present and also inspected the counterfeit items bearing their brands.

Rosales said the illegal trade of face masks without the proper permits and licenses will have a negative effect on public health.

Meanwhile, Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero said they continue to fight these illegal activities in all ports nationwide.

“We’re beginning to see the economy pick up. The local industries need all the help they can get from government agencies. We need to do our part in ensuring security and equality in the market. For us, this means curbing the trade of prohibited goods and making sure our local industries will thrive in the new normal,” he said.

The operation is part of the intensified anti-smuggling campaign of the MICP in coordination with the BOC's Enforcement and Security Service, Philippine Coast Guard, and Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission.
