Valenzuela Classic undergoes rebuilding process

After losing eight in a row, the Valenzuela Classic are looking for a shake up in hopes of changing their fortunes. And there’s no better way to do it than bring in the man responsible for the team’s early success.

Gerry Esplana, who vocally quit the squad after having disagreement with the management several months ago, is now returning for a second tour of duty with the team that needs a quick turnaround.

This was confirmed by no less than Esplana himself.

“Yes, I’ve been running our practices for about a week now. I’m taking over as coach again, but on the condition na hindi nila ako pakikialaman and the management agreed on rebuilding the team,” Esplana told FOX Sports Philippines in a telephone interview.

A former PBA Rookie of the Year, Esplana had a controversial exit in the team a few months ago when management decided to sack his deputy mentor, Jojo Villapando.

Villapando is also back in harness while Ronjay Enrile, who took over as coach previously, decided to give way for the return of Esplana.

According to Esplana, around six players are set to be released and the team is hoping to get players who are a better fit for his system.

“Kailangan namin ng medyo bata-batang big man, either center or power forward. We also need a legitimate point guard para mas makapaglaro ng No. 2 si Paolo (Hubalde),” said Esplana. “Kailangan rin namin ng wingman na slasher.”

After losing eight in a row, the Classic found themselves falling deeper in the standings at 11th spot in the tough northern division with a 4-9 win-loss record.

But Esplana remains upbeat and that would start with the remaining players that he has on the squad.

“Kailangan nating ibigay yung kumpiyansa ulit doon sa mga ibang players. Kailangan nilang maniwala ulit,” added Esplana.
